Abilities: Rukia's powers are ice-oriented. She can freeze the water droplets in the air around her in order to send waves or beams of ice at opponents. She can also manipulate and control naturally existing ice, and possesses some degree of healing abilities, being able to heal minor wounds completely and sometimes to lessen the damage done by moderate to severe injuries.
Background: Rukia's parents died when she was a baby. For a while she was cared for by her much-older sister, Hisana, however, eventually Hisana was forced to abandon her baby sister because she could not provide for both of them, so Rukia became a ward of the state and grew up in a rough orphanage that was not very well off financially or well cared for, and the children there were mostly forced to fend for themselves. As a result, Rukia became tough and streetwise, becoming the leader of a small group of boys, whom she helped find food. From a young age she showed signs of having unique powers, as did her friend at the time, Renji Abarai. However, one day, a very wealthy man from a well-bred family named Byakuya Kuchiki came to the orphanage and adopted Rukia. Unbeknowst to Rukia at that time (although she would later find out), this was because Byakuya was the widowed husband of Rukia's long-lost sister, Hisana. Hisana had passed away of a mysterious illness. It had been her greatest wish in life to see Rukia adopted into her newfound family, and on her deathbed, she begged her husband to find the sister she had abandoned and adopt her and raise her as his own sister. Although Byakuya's family had always looked down on "common" people, he loved Hisana enough that he was determined to carry out her wish. He found Rukia when she was ten years old. Rukia was taken aback by his offer of adoption, however, knowing it might lead to a better life, she reluctantly accepted, even though part of her didn't wish to leave her friends. Because she was adopted by Byakuya, Rukia was able to attend Meillure Academy. She is determined to do well because she feels that might finally lead to winning her adoptive brother's approval.
